Maputo
The most European city of Africa
The capital of Mozambique, Maputo is located on the south part of the country. With a population of 1,4 million people from various backgrounds. The richness of various influences and races is shown on the architectures and gastronomy. This peaceful coexistence is an example to the world, where for example in the same ward you can find churches, mosques, synagogues and animist religion centres.
To start understanding the real Africa it’s not necessary to leave Maputo, because a walk trough the Central Market is in itself an exotic trip where colours and smells are mixed in hundreds of huts. Other option would be the weekly fair on downtown, where you may find the best African art for minimum prices. This market is open on Saturday mornings, where bargaining is common practice.
The architecture of Maputo enchants for the nostalgia of its colonial constructions and in side this example we could mention the Museum of Natural History, the Cathedral, the downtown buildings with their subtle charm fronts.
Maputo is an entry point to whomever desires to know the Kruger Park and other South African parks, as it stands from one hour and half driving distance from the Kruger Park (much closer than Johannesburg) and an hour distance from Swaziland, another excellent destiny for whoever wants to see wild animals. There is one daily excursion from Maputo to Kruger Park (South Africa), and to the Mkhaya Park (Swaziland – said to be the best place in the world to observe rhinos).
