To Visit

Palácio da Pena

As a result of the dreams of the eccentric King Fernando II, this palace of the XIX century represents a perfect example of the romantic architecture in Portugal. Its dependencies are richly furnished and its vast gardens are the perfect idyllic scenery for long strolls.

Palácio de Monserrate

By nicknaming Sintra as the “Glorious Eden”, here you shall understand the true meaning of Lord Byron Words. Habited by illustrious writers such as William Beckford or Francis Cook, the palace and its gardens were built in the XIX century, being its perimeter a true symbol of the romantic architectural style.

Whoever visits it is enchanted by its beautiful cascades and by the mixture of botanical species and artistic shapes that were brought from the four corners of the world.

Convento dos Capuchos

It was founded in 1560 by the son of the Indian Governor. The convent is situated in one of the picks of the Sintra hill and it has been built in granite stone. Hardly can we imagine how someone can live inside its minuscule divisions. The entire convent represents a living evidence of the vow of poverty in which the Franciscan Monks live.

It’s also known as the Cork Convent, because the monks used to cover their walls with cork to make their existence bearable on the interior of their rocky divisions filled with humidity.

Palácio Nacional de Queluz

Located 15 km from Sintra Historical Centre, the convent is sometimes compared with the Versailles Palace, because of its elegant fronts, beautiful palatial gardens populated by baroque fountains and statues. It’s however by all means a Portuguese construction, in the scales and in the proper artistic style.

This Palace is the official residence of the foreign entities that are received by the Portuguese Government, and the ideal scenery for concerts, expositions and some historical recreations.

The “Regaleira artificial Caves” were dug under the conception of Italian stenograph Manini, in 1904. Another cave, in 500 metres distance, has an interior lake, were you can have a look at swans, with a bridge and a big gallery system.
